What to Wear for Your Pen & Lens Family Photoshoot.

So, you’ve booked your family photo shoot, but reality has hit, and you have no idea what everyone should wear.  You want to look like you belong together without the cringeworthy ‘matchy-matchy’ clothes. Am I right? I mean who’d want to turn up in an online search for ‘bad family photos’.

Relax, I’ve got you covered or should I say clothed?

Here are my top tips for styling your family outfits.

Aim to coordinate rather than match.

Be dressier than usual but not too formal.

Start with mum’s outfit and work from there. Or grandpa if it’s his 90th birthday.

Choose a palette of 2-4 colours. Not every colour works with every skin-type, and you want everyone to look their best. Consider neutrals with a pop of colour.

Go with plain solid colours rather than logo-wear. The people in the photos should be the heroes rather than their clothing choices

Choose subtle patterns that aren’t going to hog the viewers attention. You don’t want Uncle Bob’s loud Hawaiian shirt to be the first thing people see when they look at your family photos.

Add layers and texture for interest, even in summer.

Too much white skin can take attention away from the face, so go for ¾ sleeves or long sleeves rolled up, long pants and skirts.

Where will your photos be taken? Choose colours that won’t blend in with the background.

Also consider the décor of where the photos will be displayed in the house.

Have a trial run of your clothes. See how they look together when you lay them out and when they are being worn.

Hope that helps, so your family can look styled- up and put together with a cohesive look that will stand the test of time.
